Success with KT7 & 900, but soundcard (SB Live 5.1) doesn't work!

Hi all, I wonder if you can steer a new user in the right direction?

About two weeks ago I successfully assembled, much to my own surprise, a Thunderbird 900 system with Abit KT7, 128mb ram, network card, CD drive (fairly old, 8x or so), and 80gb hard disk. It's working really well, network and all, but one thing is driving me crazy -- lack of sound!

The problem is that I have a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card that refuses to cooperate. I've installed it properly, but there is something strange going on with the system and drivers, I think.

The system recognizes that there's a plug and play device here, and I've installed all the latest drivers (sblw9xup) as well as Liveware (which complains *a lot* on installation -- about full disks, etc.). However, I still can't even play the most basic system sounds. The icon for "play" (the right arrow) doesn't even light up under the Sounds control panel ("preview&quot😉. Under the Multimedia control panel, the audio page is completely grayed out, and on the drivers page, there is no entry under "audio devices". Yet under the Device Manager, SBLive! *does* appear under Sound, video, and game controllers.

What's going on here?

Thanks in advance!

I suggest you look at Paul's FAQs for the MB on APUSHardware.

SBLive has major issues with this MB.

Install it in slot 4, enable LPT sharing in Device manager for the SB Emulation, and don't load Liveware at startup (Start...Run...MSConfig, then uncheck any Liveware entries).

You should be able to solve it.

Thanks for the tips. I moved the card to slot 4, and stopped liveware from loading. I also changed the BIOS to "reset configuration data. " Still trying to work out the problem, though.

What is LPT sharing that you mentioned? I don't see it in my Device Manager...

Thanks!
