Somewhat continued from this thread and
this thread.

I replaced the stock HSFs on my dual cB0 PIII 700 @ 933 (VP6) with bigger Intel HSFs which came with Celeron PPGA (I think, not positive). The HSF is bigger, and black instead of natural aluminium. I lapped the new HSs a little. Didn't get a complete mirror, but it feels much smoother to the touch. Used paste from FrozenCPU.

Result (drum roll): from 43/44 C (by ABIT h/w monitor) to 38, full load - one SETI + one prime95.

I will let it burn in for a couple of weeks, and try faster.

Umm... what is your ambient temp?

Also, since the vp6 uses socket-thermistors, with no known compensation, those are probably numbers that are lower than actual core temp.

Embient in the room is about 22 C (adequately-heated house in Boston).

Sandra says the MoBo temp is 25 C. It compensates the CPU temp about 8 degrees higher than the ABIT numbers.

The main point is that the new HSF took it down 5 degrees!
