Success!!! Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 works with Phenom 2

When Gigabyte put out their initial high-end Spider platform mobo's, I bought one with the intention of dropping in the fastest Phenom I could get. It was the GA-MA790FX-DS5.

Then the TLB bug and general performance issues made me wait, and keep my Athlon 6000+ x2.

When the B3 stepping chips came out, I was seriously considering the jump to a 9950 BE. But I learned that my $200 board that was supposed to be future-proof, was not going to support that chip. Ugh, I was so mad.

Fade out, fade in...

Now Phenom 2 comes out, and to my delight, Gigabyte put out a BIOS update for my GA-MA790FX-DS5 mobo to recognize the new PH2 chips. I bought one through Newegg and dropped it in last night. It posted right away, set my ram to run at 1066 (where my Athlon 6000+ x2 would only let it run at 800), and life is groovy.

Everything is faster, and the computer is more capable than ever. I am a happy guy.

So, for those of you who have Gigabyte's GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard, the Phenom 2's run great in them. Now because of the SB600 southbridge, it won't overclock like the SB750 boards. But it'll get us by for a while.

2x2gB gSkill DDR2-1066.

I have no intention of selling the X2. My kids have a 4400+ X2 in their machine. I'll probably give the 6000+ X2 to them.

I am wondering how you know it supports the phenom II because gigabytes site doesnt mention anything about the phenom 2 on the 790FX DS5. which bios version has the phenom II support???
