Subwoofer Question

I know this is old technology but nevertheless I have connected my 1995 Aiwa NSX-999 shelf type stereo system to my Sony Bravia TV. I have 2 side speakers and 2 rear speakers that came with the stereo system connected to the Aiwa and it sounds good, well much better than the awful Sony internal speakers. But the Aiwa also have an input on the back for a subwoofer. All the speakers that I have connected at the moment are ones that came with it originally back in 1995 and a subwoofer did not.

What can I buy that will be compatible with this type system and is there any danger of blowing out my speakers if I hook one up (providing I find one).

any active sub will work with it. That is a line level output so it should be fine.

Thank you. I am not very technical and don't really know what line level output is.

Also, I have another alternative for a woofer. I have an old set of Marantz HD 770 speakers just sitting in my closet and they have built in woofers/tweeters. But they are 8 ohms and the speakers that came with the Aiwa are 6 ohms. Will these Marantz speakers work safely with this Aiwa system? Currently I have these 6 ohms speakers connected to the back of the Aiwa by their bare wires and then the Aiwa goes to the Sony TV with RCA connectors.
