Subwoofer Problem

Long story short I was going to replace my infinity PS-8 with a velodyne VRP-1200B on my downstairs receiver (a sony strdg800). Now for some reason the velodyne does not seem to want to work well with the sony. The sony has a standard sub pre-out but the velodyne wants R and L inputs. No big deal - I have a Y adapter laying around (which the velodyne manual recommends using)

Except I can't seem to get consistent sound through to the subwoofer. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have tried a large variety of cables with no real improvement. I have also tried running only one cable to one of the inputs.

Here is where it gets strange. First, the Infinity works fine on either receiver, but its has a single LFE (?) input. Also, the velodyne works just fine with the exact same cabling situation from my upstairs receiver (pioneer vsx-816)

Anyone have any ideas?

(Additional piece of information: the velodyne does not always get 'woken' up from standby mode on the sony receiver but does not have that problem on the pioneer. The Infinity does not share that issue with either receiver)

Is the only issue the "waking up", or once it's woken up, do you still have problems with inconsistent output?

For the "waking up" issue, have you tried raising the signal coming out of the receiver and lowering the gain on the sub? (To increase the signal but compensate for it to keep the overall level the same)

If that doesn't work, does the velodyne have just an "on" setting vs "auto" or whatever it's on now?

How do you have the crossover settings / filters set on the subs and the receiver's bass management?

unfortunately the issue still occurs after the standby light changes from red to geen.

I have tried messing with the various settings (but not in a very organized way) However, when I first hooked it up it worked with only the red RCA hooked up but adding the white made it stop producing sound. It proceeded to work off and on while i tried various combinations of cables - but never stayed working (all with out adjusting the levels other than the sub volume). I have none of these issues when its hooked up to the pioneer.

There is no switch for "on" or "auto"

I went back to default system settings for crossover on the sony receiver but have tried every crossover setting on the sub

Can you try setting the sony receiver to "small" speakers, setting the crossover to 80hz, and increasing the subwoofer signal level?
On the subwoofer end, set the crossover to as high as it can go (200Hz). Use your RCA splitter to connect to both the L and R line level inputs on the subwoofer.

This is odd that it's working for one receiver and not the other.

Worst case... could you just switch receivers?

Aw hell - i think I found the problem. I had tried your setting with 0 luck so I took it back upstairs to make sure I wasn't crazy - only this time it didn't work upstairs. I thought to myself "Maybe something got rattled loose". I shook it twice and lo and behold it worked again! ( iguess the motion of me carrying it upstairs made it work?)

Although this is not a condition you want out of your subwoofer. Great - now I have to find out if we have any other clearance subs I can get for rediculously cheap

At least i won't have to change receivers. Took me about 15min and another person to be able to pull the sub cables and power cord from their hiding place. Yeesh - that would be a mess

On my list of things to remember is next time I buy a component rack, it needs to have an open back 😛

So you're going to return that one?

What's your budget for a different one?

Heh - I hear ya.

I think I will see about getting it repaired. I doubt I will be able to get the same quality sub for the same price. The place I work for is redoing their audio line and for some reason our location has a lot of discontinued (for us) products that are 'must go'.

I paid <$75 for the vrp-1200

Yeah, $75 isn't going to get you a whole lot.

No problem. I'm glad you figured out what it was.

It might be worth it try to see for yourself if it's something that's visibly loose that you could fix yourself.

I don't know what your warranty situation is with this thing, but it might be worth a shot if you're pretty sure it's just something that's loose in there.
