Subwoofer power

You know when you have too much bass power when it kills your pc. :(

At least it wasn't a permanent thing. :)

I was playing a sine wave burst test through winamp when the sound started breaking up and squealing. I tried taking video of the K10 rack christmas tree but the bass hits so hard the video blanks out. :Q The B&K maxes out at 140 dB and it was going louder. I wasn't sure what was going on until I tried to move the mouse and it was frozen. :Q I quickly turned down the master out on the MOTU896 and hit the reset button.

I heard the usual beep from the ARC1261ML but no post.

Power switch off, cover and fan panel open - yup both 8800 and 1261 PCI-E cards not seated. :Q

I probably should not have broken those lock tabs off the slots.

Oh well it was a test - we're running crew only for the next two weeks as the ship is prepared for drydock. Busy busy busy.

Ok, now you have to look up all the "is putting your sub next to your computer a bad thing?" threads and update :p

And you use this equipment for what exactly?

Is this some kind of secret naval sonic weapon?

Hope you have hearing protection!

I'm always plugged around this equipment. :)

What kind of earplugs do you use to protect your ears in 140+db environments? The ones I've seen around only reduce by 30db :/

That's LRAD and that's a high frequency burst. ;) I'm ET NOT WEPS! ;)

The ratings are A-weighted. These were low frequency tests and the attentuation of plugs are much greater. Of course higher frequencies are much more damaging to human ears than extreme SPL at lower frequencies, however when the SPL is great enough to make one hallucinate and experience difficulty in breathing then plugs do little good. :Q

Where can I find this sine wave burst test that you speak of?

I create it with a synthesizer. It can be recorded as well but it would need a stout warning/reminder about playback in home systems. The frequencies do not appear to be playing very loud and the novice will turn the volume louder until they hear squealing, farting, or crunching noises - which in most cases damage or destroy drivers in speakers.

When the playback is audible and played back at high levels it creates a sense of discomfort and unease that make people upset - including security that thinks the unthinkable is happening. (bombardment  )

For music, try something like this:

Text

It's tame in comparison and if you have a subwoofer that can produce fundamentals below 20Hz it will give you a gentle message. If you can hit 120+ dB at 16Hz it's a pleasure. :D

While it's debatable if there is such a thing (I don't think there is a brown "note" per say). People do react to extreme SPL in the lower regions differently, let's just put it at that.

Standing up is safest. Perhaps when seated the effects of vibration and rubbing of various body parts have an effect like a laxative that makes some have the urge to use the facilities. :Q Others become heavily nauseated and must seek fresh air and sky. Of course we always tell them it's from the motion of the ocean. ;)
