Where is the best place to put my subWoofer for optimal sound? In front of me? On the floor?

i remember seeing on TV that it doesn't matter where you put it on the floor, because you can't tell where the noise from the subwoofer is coming from.

Yup, low frequency bass is thought of as non-directional so it really shouldn't matter where you place it. I stick mine in a corner on the floor against the wall.

Don't knock it, I do just that.... Right on a small bridged stand on the back of my desk a few inches off the floor. Perfect footstool, and nice audio :)

Mine is on a low shelf under the desk, anywhere out of the way really is ideal.

For fun you can try placing it next to a sleeping friends head, cranking up the vol and then playing a very bassy track :D .... did I do that?...nah...no way

Frequencies below 300hz start to become omni-directional, so theoretically it doesn't matter where you place it. However low frequencies are enforced by placing a subwoofer (or full range loudspeaker) in the corners, and inversely decreased by placing them away from walls or corners. If you place it off the floor the low frequency output will be decreased.
