The only thing you want to vibrate is the air in the room. When the walls, floor, or other objects in the room vibrate, they can cause noise that you don't want.

I haven't tried this personally, but I've read that you should put the subwoofer where you plan to sit while listening to it. Then you are supposed to crawl around on the floor until the bass sounds the best to you. The place where the sub sounds the best is where you are supposed to place the woofer.
