Marble floors? Damn, nice.

Why don't you get some sort of pad for the sub?

this is possibly the tiniest, most run down house of any atoter. it happens to have old marble floors and high ceilings. :)

Carpet the walls.

A friend of mine did that... he was in an apartment and was trying not to upset the neighbors too much with his home recording studio.

Seriously though, wall hangings would help cut down on the echo quite a bit. A large tapestry wall hanging would work. Bookcases and other furniture would also help.

Carpet would work even better...but it would look funky as hell. :p

Glue the bottoms of egg cartons all over your walls.....won't be pretty, but it'll work. Or you could cover your walls in fiberglass insulation. Again, not pretty but effective. :)

Floor is too rigid...it won't virbate to transmit bass. You need a wooded floor, carpenting...some kind of medium that will vibrate.

well if you're got marble floors and 18 foot ceilings its gonna take a lot of work.

heavy drapes and rugs would be the first start.

Another good way to place your subwoofer in the actual listening spot and then move/walk around the room with an SPL meter to find where the most output is.

Then just put the sub there.

At what frequency should you do this? Or should you just use white noise?

In theory at all the frequencies. They have excel spreadsheets that can help you determine where you'll have dips and rises. Google it.

For the OP
Definitely fill the room. Books are excellent as are floor coverings. Pictures are not good if they have glass. Cloth covered wall hangings are good or you could buy/build acoustic panels.

the biggest problem is that since the hosue is relatively small, the theate room at night is the sitting/living room by day. so i can't go overboard with the wall things, other than paintings which i'm putting up.

Try paintings, put some more furniture up against the walls, and like they said, carpet your walls ;)

noise (test discs have them) - should give you the strongest overall output.

From there you can run an EQ on it to smooth out the peaks.

I'Ve seen people put subs in and have zero bass at the listening position because its all canceled out. Just moving it a few feet will fix the problem, unless it is a square room or where length/width are multiples of each other.
