Subwoofer humming

I have had this Altec Lansing computer speakers for a few years now. It might be coming to the end of it's life but is working well enough for me. The issue though is that the subwoofer makes a humming noise when the computer is not plugged in. The speaker wires run with the rest of the power cables so it might be interference but when the computer is on, I don't notice the humming. Any ideas?

Sounds like A/C hum, and that is present when grounding is not good or complete. Try a separate ground wire from the subwoofer to a good earth ground. Or, from the computer chassis.

I had a humming noise coming from my sub on my Logitech Z-5500 speakers. I found out it was the plug from the control panel, the plug is like a 15-pin VGA monitor plug. The plug was a little loose even when tightening the screws. I ended up squeezing the outer metal on the plug and solved the humming noise, so it could be an earth problem.

What's the model number of the speakers you have?

Try reversing the A/C mains plug. The speakers' grounding circuit are the black colored leads and connectors. If there is a mounting screw holding in the connection panel, try connecting a ground to it.
