Well it's time for me to pick up a subwoofer. The way i see it i have two options. First is to pick up an Hsu Research VTF-2 for $450USD. From what i heard, it's one of the best performers out there, and actually outperforms most subwoofers in the sub-$1500 range. Impressive. But i've heard even more praise about SVS Subwoofers. So much actually, that i'm dying to get one. Their PC series (powered) are far too expensive, but i think i could afford a CS series. They do require a separate amp, but that's why i can afford them - if i buy a cheaper amp. They are sold with $390-dollar Samson S700 amps, but that's out of my reach. I emailed them and told them about my problem, and they said i should consider this 250W plate amp from Parts Express. So that's $490 for the amp along with their 25-31CS subwoofer. Well, what i'd like to know is if these cheapo amps are any good? I mean i wouldn't want to spend half a grand and end up with something that sounds like crap, right? What do you guys think of the amp? And which way do you think i should go?

I cannot speak first hand about that particular plate amp(where are you Vip?), but subs do not need a very high fidelity amp only high powered. My M&K sub that cost me $1300 ten years ago has a 350 watt plate amp and sounds great.

the biggest deal when choosing an amp for your sub is the distortion at the listed power rating.
the sub you list here lists a .1% THD (total harmonic distortion) at 250 watts (RMS - continuous power) going in to a 4 ohm load (standard subs run in the 4-6, some are even 8 ohm load). i didn't look at the sub, so check the resistance (listed in ohms) and compare it to the power rating on the amp. assuming the THD level stays below .1% at whatever power rating you use, the amp will work just fine. below 10%THD is completely inaudible in a subwoofer (unless you are considered "golden eared") especially in a car, where the ambient noise will more than cover 10% distortion below 60hz (60hz being the highest frequency of the sine wave generated by your sub - the highest note it will play). however, at anything over .2 or .3%THD the likelyhood of blowing the sub due to underpowering increases exponentially. and yes, more speakers and subs are blown from being underpowered at high volumes than being overpowered at high volumes. this is due to the heat caused in the speaker when underpowered, as it will literally melt the voice coil). so dont push the sub, audio equipment is much more sensitive to power fluctuations and underpowering than 99% of computer components when dealing with high end audio and/or high volumes.
hope that helps

That's right i'm planning on using a 40" tall subwoofer in a car. I even got a little circle hole cut out for it in the roof with a little ambrella to cover it from the rain.

I wouldn't expect to get toooo much room shaking bass from the 25-31, but it would be decent.
Youd be better off with something like the
Adire Audio Dharman, it uses a Shiva in a vented box, and it should be an awesome sub.

From a DIY'ers perspective, is uses a really good $120 driver, and (the same amp as the PE 300-794), a powerful $135 plate amp.

I have the parts express 300-794 sub amp in my own HT sub (check my sig for my project), very powerful (275watts RMS @ 4ohms), and inexpensive :)

If you want an amp like the Samson, look for the QSC RMX series. They're pretty cheap, and should do you just fine.

Doesn't that 1337 receiver you bought have enough gumption to run a passive sub?

BTW, I'd love to know why it's even called a "subwoofer"!

Vip, you must have radar. I knew it was just matter of time before you'd get here. Did Comissioner Gordon put out the Vip Light?

Vip, that is another excellent sub. But for $599, i could get that Parts Express amp and the baddest sub SVS offers - 16-46CS. But i think that's overkill. If not the 25-31, then the 20-39, which seems to be the choice of 90% of SVS owners.

LOL guys :D

I wish I could get a chance to see the drivers inside the SVS's, and even better their specs, then I could get a better idea of the quality/sound it would be capable of.
