Hey guys, just looking for options for a subwoofer unit. The house I just moved into has 5 speakers wall-mounted(front L/R, front center and rear L/R) and a gigantic sub that was left behind by the seller. I plugged the sub up the other day to try hooking it up and it popped(capacitor maybe?) and a small amount of white smoke came out of the back of the subwoofer. I'm assuming it's fried.

If you guys have any ideas I should try before I toss it I'm open to anything. If not, I'm just wanting an easy option off of Amazon to replace it. I don't need anything too crazy, just something that sounds decent in thet $100-$200 range.

I'm picking up a refurb receiver for $170 off of Amazon to go with it:

Here's a picture of the current sub I have and the connections going into the wall, FWIW:

gigantic not found

anyway googleing tells me that wasn't the most expensive sub nor the best, looks like it was part of a HTITB kit

It has a fuse on the back, but with your tale of smoke, it clearly needs repair. I was even to mention removing all connections, except the power plug, set the volume to the lowest and remove the fuse, then plug it in. Of course nothing should happen, then unplug from the wall, plug the fuse, plug the power back and turn it on, but smoke often means it's too late.

It's up to you whether it's cheaper to repair it or buy a replacement. I, myself, would try to have it repaired. I've done so with a receiver before and they always quote half the price of buying a replacement new one.
