Subway (restaurant) computers

I visited a local subway and they really took a step in the right direction since they have been tending to hire immigrant help around here that were barely able to communicate in english. They had a computer touchscreen terminal where you place your order on the computer. Then it prints a receipt for you and prints the order for the "sandwich artists". You pay at the register and then they hand you your sub and you don't have to deal with someone who can't understand you. I really enjoyed it much more than the standard yelling at the employees method.

I'd be happier if people learned english.
But if this is what we gotta do to get service, so be it.

They've had the same thing at convenience stores around here for a long time. It's great.

Man, I went to subway last night (in Richmond, VA, no less), and the mexigrants there were angry at me for speaking English! Okay, you know, I speak enough Spanish to order my effing sandwich, but when the lady mumbles to her colleague "por qué esos gringos estúpidos no pueden hablar español?*" that's when I decide to make life just a little harder for esas chicas mexicánas.

ETA: Next time I get a comment like that I'm going into German and yelling at them when they get my order wrong.

I would have told the lady to go f**k herself and walked out.

I think he means further north. :p

And the computer ordering interface thing is a great idea, until you get a grandma who can't understand what she's supposed to do with the screen.

And these things definitely wont work in a major metropolitan area when everyone is so rushed for time, all the time. :)

But definitely good use of technology to bridge a communications gap. Kinda reminds me of Back to the future 2 too.

My ideal restaurant ordering system:

Sit at table.
Waitwhatever brings pitcher of water and leaves it on table.
Tap in order on electronic menu.
Food comes in timely fashion. Waitwhatever is courteous and efficient.
Eat good food.
Decide I want dessert.
Tap dessert into electronic menu.
Waitwhatever brings dessert in a timely fashion.
Eat good food.
Slide CC through reader built into electronic menu.
Enter tip amount.
Receipt prints at table.
Leave happy.

The number one thing that pisses me off at restaurants is when I have to wait forever for the check. It is usually because the staff isn't properly trained on using the elctronic register and therefore tries to avoid the inevitable.

I don't think that's the reason, but it annoys me too. On the flip side, some people would be pissed that the waiter is rushing them out of the table by bringing the check too soon.
