I prefer extratropical cyclones that we can experience here in the Pacific Northwest and other places.
The Columbus Day Storm of 1962 was the most powerful extratropical storm to hit the United States in the 20th century. It battered the Oregon and Washington coasts with category 3 hurricane force winds, with gusts up to 179mph.
It blew down over 11
billion board feet of timber. For comparison, the strongest east coast hurricane blew down 2.65 billion board feet of timber.
The cost of the storm in 2002 dollars is ~5 billion dollars. :Q
Pretty amazing stuff.
