Situation:
You click on a certain link in an AT thread, and it directs you to the subscriber area ... being a non subscriber, you have to cut, paste and adapt that link to be able to read the corresponding thread.
Solution for non-subscribers:
Open up your HOSTS file, inside the "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" folder. Add the following line on the end of the file:
216.151.100.125 subscriber.anandtech.com
This way, any link going to subscriber.anandtech.com will be redirected the forums.anandtech.com server.
DON'T FORGET: Remove that line the day you subscribe to the forums!
Solution for subscribers:
It's just a reminder. Make our life easier ... when linking to a thread, change the "http://subscriber.anandtech.com/" to ."http://forums.anandtech.com/" Both subscriber and non-subscribers will be able to read the thread normally. For example, the following link ...
http://subscriber.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=38&threadid=791561
... should be typed in as ...
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=38&threadid=791561
It's much easier for the few subscribers to adopt this habit, than thousands of non-subscribers to edit their HOSTS files. Nevertheless, hardcore freeloaders now have a workaround for this problem. Comments are welcomed ...

Thanks, but it is easier than you describe. If you are a subscriber, just replace the word "subscriber" in the link with the word, "forums". Going the other way, subscribers are automatically switched to the link on the subscriber forums when they click a non-subscriber (forums) link.
If you post all your links as "http://forums.anandtech.com/" they will always work for everyone.
