Mobo = Gigabyte 8KNXP, Intel 875P chipset, Intel 3.0 CPU, 512 MB PC 3500 dual channel memory [OCZ ELDCKOCZ. running at 200MHz/800MHz, ATI All-In-Wonder 9700 PRO video, Windows XP.

Not a gamer, not running games. Primarily reason to purchase this high level system is video capture/editing/burning as VCD or DVD, Internet, downloading.

Infrequently, while operating, the system will seem to hesitiate and to slowly respond to mouse clicks or not respond to them at all. This continues for a short period of time and then suddenly the screen resolution jumps to the basic VGA resolution and a dialog box states that "Windows has recovered from a device failure, you must reboot the computer ???? " After the reboot everything is normal including the resolution.

These symptoms seem to be extremely close to a frequently reported problem about the Intel 7205 chipset. Intel apparently identified two AGP parameters of their chipset that did not meet their timing specification, and that the issue will not be corrected.

Is it possible that the Intel 875P chipset has this same defect?? I recall that there was at one time a threat of a class action suit to force Intel to fix the problem or provide refunds of some kind. I cannot say that it was proved that the failure to meet the specs was the cause of this oft reported problem between the ATI AIW and the 7205 chipset.

Many gamers solved the problem by going to an NVIDIA video card. That is not really feasible, in this case, because the primary use of this system is related to making CD's/DVD's from VHS movies and the many video and video editing variants thereof. Thus there really is no alternate video card that provides the capability including the TV tuner capability.

The basic question is whether this is a problem being experienced by others, and of course whether they have found a solution.

Viewing the event log seems to give : EVENT ID: 108, ATI2MTAG as the likely related item. The event log also reports some Disk #11 errors and ATAPI #5 errors, however, these do not seem to be time correlated to the subject event.

Some things tried to date: It seems as if these things have reduced the frequency of occurrence of the events.

Has disabled "fast wites" in Smartgart.

Has reduced AGP to 4X

Has raised the AGP voltage to 1.7 volts.

For that video card, you need a premium power supply. Antec, sparkle (fortron), enermax, enlight, and seasonic are a few name brand quality supplies. If yours is top notch, I would suggest you check the ati or rage 3d website for a different driver or catylist for your video card. Also check the hardware manager under systems in the control panel for any conflicts. If your bios allows it, you might even bump up the agp voltage to 1.7 and see if that helps.
