With spring right around the corner, I've been slowly trying to motivate myself to get the DIY Handyman in me ready to go. Thankfully it's been absolutely friggin cold this week, so I've watched the flowers we planted in the front garden two weeks ago get decimated by overnight freezes.

Anyway, it got me thinking about the DIY and home ownership threads that pop up in OT fairly regularly, and I figured I'd just toss this one in for shits and giggles. We have a "Garage" for car nuts. We have a "Health & Fitness" for body jocks. We don't have a "Home & Garden" for us namby-pambies that actually like that sort of thing.

Just a thought. I figured if it's not knocking around in those big heads of yours yet, this might get something started... especially since there seems to have been a small movement to diversify and get a few more subforums started lately.

/Cheers!

I just looked at the first 150 threads in OT and saw only 1 thread about anything to do with homes - that one was about lawn insects.

Okay. Open stupid stubs that nobody cares about instead.

Re: Searching... They're sporadic, but vi has posted a bunch, and several others have as well. They're not "easily" searchable since there's never a common theme. But saying there is no interest or balkanization... Why not roll the garage et al back into OT then? Just saying.h

I like the idea of a Home & Garden forum, but not on AT.

IMO it is better to not dilute the existing H&G-centric forums on the web, let each have the strong community experience they specialize in instead of people respected for their electronics or computing playing cowboy in other fields and being more trusted because they built a rep around computing/tech.

At least with cars, there's a computer and electronics inside and it's still more of a techy mindset. Disclaimer - I do a lot of DIY home projects and garden myself... just wouldn't visit such a forum on AT in favor of existing forums on other sites for home, garage, gardening., etc.

If anything I feel these types of forums should be pruned away (pun intended), instead adding an Electronics Design & Repair subforum as it better aligns with the techy electronics nature of the site. Granted, there are other sites that would initially be stronger in that field too, but I don't see AT as gaining much web share in gardening, there are far too many old school gardeners out there that have never even visited AT.

The other problem with an H&G forum is the answers that some of our resident experts hand out. I remember one electrical thread that would end up in a death if some of the advice had been followed. My guess is there is some liability for AT if some do it your self type killed his family based on advice he gets here.
