I'm not sure about the Outback, but I do know that the Impreza is one of the most successful Rally cars in history. So yes, their AWD system is pretty damn good... I'll vouch for them. Now if they could only get rid of the bugeye headlights on their new Impreza...

I've heard that the Outback is good an uncle of mine has one and he loves it! They are supposed to be really durable (I don't like them because of the look) and a decent ride not a luxury car but it's not supposed to be ad either. Did you test drive one? I would suggest going and test driving one and seeing if you like it or not.

Make sure you get ALL the books that go with the car to begin with... you don't want to be stuck buying $300 in books after the fact. The all-wheel part of the car makes the user "manual" into ...like ...three books, I believe. :Q

or something...

Just a spot for Subaru: our '91 Loyale wagon is coming up on 100k miles, no major maintanence and factory clutch. :) Great cheap car.

wow!

Anyway, I think Audi and Subaru is the industry leader in AWD.

Subaru does have a good AWD system. But their build quality isn't up to par for the price. I would take an Audi over the Subaru any day. Equivalent AWD system, and the rest of the car is much much much nicer.

I had a Suburu all wheel drive SVX and it was one of worst cars in terms of reliability that I've ever had (that wasn't American-made). This car was constantly in the shop. It had weird quirks too, like it couldn't handle Shell gas (apparently something about water saturation in Shell gas; I'm no mechanic but this is what a couple mechanics said) and it completely died on several occassions. DO NOT buy a Subaru! And if you must buy one, make sure to get an extended warranty. You'll definitely need it.

I own two Subarus (Impreza and Outback Legacy). The AWD is impressive and I've driven it in snow and rain. I have made quite a few drives in the Northeast where other 4 wheel drive vehicles were off the road and I was fine. Once you cross the border in Colorado, it seems that every second car is a Subaru.

Consumer Reports rates them highly as well.

Michael

ps - the SVX was an attempt at a "sportscar" by Subaru and is not indicative of the normal quality. I haven't had one major repair on my Impreza - 7 years and 100K miles.

Are the Impreza's fast? The 2.5RS Impreza has 160hp I think. Does it have pretty good acceleration for what it is?

Impresas are fast and there is a new model coming out. They will only ship about 20k of those models to the States. WRX it is I think.

I'd get a VW though, the Passats AWDs are nice. In a diesel would be sweeter.

At work I drive my friends '00 Impreza 2.5 RS all the time. Its a sweet ride.

Its a rally car, just remember that. Speed wise, its about as fast as a Honda Civic Si (their sport model of the civic). There is a decent aftermarket for it and it has a extremely loyal following.

My friend hasn't had any major maintenece done on it yet, it simply hasn't needed it. We just got finished doing donuts in the snow (ya baby, in TX, its sweet!). The AWD system is extremely balanced, its a shame that Subaru won't bring the STi version from Europe over here.

The WRX is the Impreza with a Turbo. The new WRX coming to America this year is IMO ugly, but its fast(we're talking 14.2-14.5 1/2 mile times). They're almost as fast as a new Camaro Z28, but not quite up there. The older WRX's (00' and before) are sweet cars, if I could get my hands on one I would.

Subaru does make a really nice all wheel drive system as does Audi. I have an Audi A4 1.8T..... the Quattro system on these cars are really amazing! I looked at the Subaru Impreza too...just a bit too "rally" looking for my tastes but really fun to drive.

The WRX's are Subaru's Japanese rally cars. The older models can do like 10-11 second quarter miles stock.

Also from what I've heard and seen Subaru's are very very reliable cars. I see just as many older models as newer ones on the streets.

hehe. Visiting New Hampshire on vacation I saw, get this, a 2 pairs of the exact same Subaru's in a parking lot. And it wasn't that big of a lot either. There are EVERYWHERE there :)

i think you're exaggerating on the 1/4 mile times of the WXR. sure it may be fast, but 10-11 second times is faster than a corvette or a viper. it's probably more like 13 or 14 seconds.

Colorado/Oregon/Washington anywhere that you could encounter an abnormal amount of road/weather issues, you will find a bunch of Subarus. I have an 85 wagon with 160,000 miles on it going strong. I helped my father put around 300,000 on an 84 wagon and it never had any major problems.

Soon(hopefully) I will be able to upgrade to a newer Sub.

Unless I win the lottery and can afford that Audi Allroad beast.

I believe the Outback Sport is the sports version of the Impreza correct. I test drove one about a year ago and was not to impressed with it. The thing sounded like a truck and it made a lot of noise when I braked. Maybe I just got a bad one. One of the guys at work has an Impreza and loves the thing.

I have a '93 Impreza, the first year they were sold in the US. It is somewhat underpowered, and I wouldn't describe it as fast. It is very dependable and AWD makes for much safer driving. It doesn't snow where I live now, but I know that I can drive into the snowy areas and be safer.

I may buy a new car this summer and I'm wavering between another Impreza, a Legacy, or a Forester.

cyclistca - The Outback Sport is a hybrid, almost hatchback version of the Impreza. The Forester is built off of an Impreza chasis as well.

I have a 2000 Outback Sport that I bought in late March with 7 miles on it. I'm at 18,789 now. (Bear in mind that I also drove another 15K miles on company vehicles in that time.) I love it. Subaru makes the cheapest car with AWD. Nothing else is in the same price range as the Imprezza. The AWD is great from weather realted problems and I've had mine off road a couple of times (yes the door seals are very good a keeping the water out and if you are crazy enough, you can sit the car in water up to the bumper and not stall it out. The car was a month old at the time I had to go through that for a rescue. But if you do that sort of thing, buy a skid plate for the rear differential and the oil pan and modify the rear drivers side tow hook to soemthing that you can attach the winch or com-a-long to for that eventual I'm stuck and screwed that will happen. The one thing I don't like is the hood scoop. I wish it wasn't on the car. It looks nice from the outside but blocks some view from the inside. If I have to replace it for ANY reason, I'm just dropping a regular Imprezza hood on it. Oh and the cup holders suck. But a really nice, well handling car. Especially when they can be had for around $18K loaded.

Actually, the WRX will actually be coming to the states. It's not the diehard rally WRX that first debuted in wagon form. You can still get it in Wagon form, but why? Either way, both cars are ugly:)

That doesn't mean I wouldn't want one. Passat AWD, Audi 1.8T Quattro or Subie WRX? Hmm..

I'm take my WRX in blue:)

For more information on the upcoming Impreza release check this site: http://www.new-impreza.com/ We'll be getting the WRX, but in single turbo form only, and the interior will be a stripped down version of what the Japanese get... damn...

I would be trying to finance one of those current Rally models if it came in a wagon model. I am a sucker for the extra snowboards allowed in the wagon.

I'm a sucker for the extra gear space and a more confortable sleep when the need arises, although sleeping in the fetal position is not the most comfortable but my girlfriend (5 ft tall) can stretch out comfortably. Plus the roof rack makes transporting a kayak easier.
