I saw this pop up on CL, and it piqued my attention.

http://boulder.craigslist.org/cto/1345196915.html

1988 Subaru XT6 for sale.
-204K miiles
-5 speed
-no power steering
-4 new tires
-new rear break pads (rotors are in good shape)
-needs front cv joint work
-dash is worn looking
-the engine is in excellent condition
-flat 6 motor
-passed emissions for the next 2 years in Jan '09 The car needs to be shifted into neutral at all times that it is not accelerating. Otherwise the engine cuts off. Easy to adjust your driving habits to and runs perfect otherwise. This is a running car with a super fast and well maintained engine.

Pictures

It does have problems, but I still like it. I can get an almost new one from CL with everything working and 83K miles for $3800.

Has anyone worked on or owned one of these and can give me some advice? Is it worth it at that price, or is it a pile of junk?

Have you owned one, or are you just basing this off of a friend's experience?

For a daily driver or for a project? I would stay away from it as a daily driver and would go with something more popular (aka easy to find junkyard parts), but if it's for a project there's a pretty large group of XT6 owners on the Ultimate Subaru Message Board.

From what I know (I stick with Legacies and Imps), they were pretty reliable. There's a fair number of die-hard XT6 fans out there but it was a low production vehicle that was only made for 2years(?), meaning not a whole lot of parts left. And the parts don't interchange very well to other Subaru lines. I think the biggest expense is the suspension, it had an air suspension which was very expensive and you basically have to convert it to struts now.

That car is so not common, what will happen when you need parts / repair for this? Butt-rape?

Explain the fix. I wouldn't mind having one but I would definitely wouldn't want to rely on it as my only means of transportation.

It was just cleaning the IAC valve. It is really easy to access (right on top of the engine, 1 bolt removal) and can be cleaned using whatever. I used carb cleaner. It is circled in the picture.

The other main problem is the CTS (coolant temp sensor). It's not the sensor itself, it's the connection. You have to solder the wires and heat shrink them completely or you have to replace the connector every 6 months. But, the CTS is also right on top of the engine.

IAC and CTS

I'll post more pictures of the car when it is cleaner.

I did end up taking the rear wing off though. Looks much better now, but I have some holes to fill. Text

By now all air shocks have been broken, and the cost is $1200 for all of them new from Subaru. Not to mention if you have compressor problems. Mine had air shocks, but I'm glad one of the PO's switched it to normal.

I do have AWD :D

I also have a 2.7, but there is no room in the engine bay for a turbo. :frown:

My friend and I had compressor problems. We just took a screwdriver and broke through the fender to get at the wiring (which was shot). A simple hard solder of everything together fixed it!

(this car cost 350 bucks!)

This thing is sweet in snow! The AWD really works well and it looks right at home. I dove past a Mitsubishi Eclipse in a ditch!

Need help with idle problem on my 91 xt6. car will start and run good at high rpms if i keep pumping gas pedal. once i stop pumping (either keeping pedal depressed and sterady or letting off gas completely), car will die. starts right up as long as i pump gas. there are no obvious vacum leaks, gas pressure is at 35 psi (does drop a bit when i accelerate, but does recover), computer puts out what appears to be code "11", but i do not believe that there is a crank angle sensor on this car....any suggestions???

what is the purpose of the IAC valve?

It keeps the car running, it allows enough air into the intake to let the car idle when the throttle plate is closed.
It is very likely carboned up, has a leaking diaphragm or dead (depending on the design).
Find it, remove it and give it a good cleaning with throttle body/ carb cleaner and see if it helps your idle issue.
