I was considering buying this Subaru and was wondering if anyone out there had any comments or pointing me in the direction of a good forum.

Unfortunately, I can neither afford a WRX, nor the added insurance so its outta the question :)

I want a car w/ AWD, decent gas mileage, and reliability.

thnx all

For a site, check out i-club. Tons of info over there.

As for the car, they aren't the quickest performer, but they are peppy, offer great functionality, have excellent reliability, and are still one of the nicest looking cars in their price range on the road.

If you can find a pampered one, go for it!

was in fact considering a new one in a month or 2 (need time to round the money up)

also considering the outback sport (impreza line)
more standard equipment less in price (but not as neat (in a geeky way) looking)
and no 4 disc breaks; drum in rear
is it a huge deal?

Really? Doh!

I was thinking of the 2.5RS coupes from the previous gen. Oops! :Q

As for what my personal preference is, I'd take an Outback Sport over the RS any day of the week. Once you own a hatchback, you never go back. I'll doubt I'll ever own another car that doesn't have 3 or 5 doors.

The new imprezzas just look better in a wagon for as well IMHO.

LOL the 2.5RS gets no love since the rex came out...............

But yeah, I wouldn't get the GD 2.5RS. The older GC8 RS looks a lot better IMO.

Whatever. I just know that when I was in college a wagon would have been invaluable when moving home or even when trying to haul home laundry when heading back to the parents home on long holiday weekend.

The OBS isn't really even a wagon. It's more of an extended hatch. They're sweet looking cars that women find "cute" (NOT A BAD THING!) :)

I don't know if you do any long distance lan parties or not either, but the hatches come in VERY handy when trying to load up a couple monitors and couple full towers.

There's nothing really wrong with the new 2.5 RS... its just ugly.

Personally, I wanted one a year ago, but after driving one on numerous occasions, I felt that it wasn't the car for me. For the kind of money you'd be spending, I'd get a slightly used car...

See how much you can spec out a new Golf 1.8T

You can't get a 4 door Golf 1.8T anymore. :( To get the 1.8T engine, you must get the 2 door GTI, which means "Bling Bling!" insurance for a 21 year old. I'm 24 and the insurance was ridiculously high for me.

I'm trying to figure out the insurance on the new 1.8t GTI's myself. If I was to get full coverage on on '01 1.8t GTI that was valued at $20,000, insurance would have run me about $800 a year.

On my '95 VR6 GTI valued at $10,000, my insurance runs me about $300 a year.

I have a friend who has a 1998 2.5rs 5 speed. It's black with those ugly gold rims lol. Anyway, he claims it's pretty fast, and says he ran a 14.7 1/4 mile at the track (don't know the MPH) with some minor mods. K&N cone, not the drop in kind, I forget the rest. Does this sound believable? He's a little fishy since he claims he "roasted" a late model Z28. I'd say it was probably a 6cylinder Fbody if he really won.

my dad heard on car talk the other day that clutches on manual subaru's were uber expensive to replace because of the awd mechanism

i cant find the evidence backing this? anyone wanna comment on that? (ive look through car talks website)

Well, the 2.5RS is a good car... fairly reliable. I like it but it sounds like you would do better with a Eclipse GSX... j/k! :)
The Toyota Matrix comes in a awd trim, but the awd drivetrain on the Matrix is built like paper, put enough hp through it (ie 180hp from the top of line fwd Matrix) and you'd have some reliablity problems.

About the clutch issue, a clutch is a clutch... doesn't matter that it's awd, it might be expensive for labor or some other reason... you should be more concerned about the diffs and tranny being expensive.
But since Subaru parts are generally a tad more expensive to begin with...

I can believe a high 14 second run with 2.5RS, but he was prolly dumping the clutch at high RPM... he'll probably destroy that tranny if he keeps doing that. And there's no way he beat a late model Z28 unless that guy doesn't know how to drive...

well im worried because while i learnt on a manual car i havent driven one for two years. im fairly confident after a week or two that ill have the hang of it; but dont wanna worry about expensive repairs that i could have avoided down the line (by buying an automatic up front)

I agree with vi-edit. I wouldn't give up my Outback Sport for a WRX. Wagons are great for hauling things.

Turbos are nice but I'd rather have the bigger engine.
