Sub-par Oblivion performance with 1950XT

Yeah, I'm coming up on 900 CPU marks with the 2200 OC and a total score of almost 4600. I know I should be able to hit at least 2400, but I need to read more so I completely understand what I need to do with the memory divider.

Upon further investigation, it appears that my Corsair XMS 3200 Platinum will NOT run at 200MHz. I dropped the CPU multiplier down to 6 to take it out of the equation and I left the HTT at the standard 200. Even with the timings at 2.5 3 3 8, the system will not POST with the memory set to DDR400 in BIOS. It will run at 183MHz, so I'm hoping this won't hold me back too much since I don't want to buy new RAM with prices like they are now.

hehe, yeah. I read some stuff over there and I should probably start my own thread since this thread has veered away from video/Oblivion tweaking into OCing and system tweaking. Thanks to everybody for the help!

I got the CPU OCed to 2430 and the RAM running 173MHz 2.5 3 3 7, which netted me 4694 3DMarks, 950 of which were CPU marks. I'm running Prime95 Blend torture test overnight while I'm at work to make sure it's stable. I don't know if I'll take it any higher since I have stock cooling, but I'm going to see if anybody in the CPU/OCing forum can help me figure out why my RAM won't hit 200MHz.

Oblivion seems to be just too too intensive, much more than the benchmarks tell. I just started the game and in the dungeons itself I often get 19 and lower 20s. Actually that is atleast 1/3rd of it. Many times I get 30-72 as well. I am playing at 1280x960 with each setting maxed out but I am not using any AA.

and you might have to adjust the 'timings' and the divider to hit 200Mhz

haha, I think it's A64 3800+ right now. I'm home from work and it ran Prime95 for 9.5 hours without any errors. After 9.5 hours of being under full load, the core temp was only like 42-43C. I adjusted the memory timings and the divider. I had to set the ram to ddr266 for it to end up at 173MHz with my CPU set at 270MHz. My RAM won't even run DDR400 with everything at stock speeds/timings, so I have no idea what's wrong. I started a thread in CPU/OC forum so maybe some of the gurus over there will come up with something.

how is Oblivion performance?

have you lowered the RAM timings a bit?

[the guys in CPU/OC are usually quite helpful -- and [usually] with less 'flames' than video]

I actually haven't finished retweaking Oblivion since I reinstalled it. I'm getting ready to finish that and then, hopefully, post how much better Oblivion runs! I messed around with tighter and looser timings. It doesn't seem to make a difference as far as allowing the RAM to hit 200MHz.

The RAM problem appears to be fixed now. I took them out and tested them one at a time and they both did DDR400. I switched the first stick to where the second one was and vice-versa because the first stick had an SPD setting for 166MHz as well as 200MHz, so it's possible that's what was causing my problem, but I really don't know. I'm going to re-overclock my system and see what 3DMark06 has to say about it!

i had very similar problems a long time ago ... glad to see you got a nice *new* system ... for free

btw, who cares about 3DMark? ... how is game performance?
[i know, i know ... it has its uses to see relative changes in a system]
