Sub 1000 laptop???

Ok, I need a basic laptop for under a grand. AMD if possible, but whatever has good battery life and something I can dump more RAM into. Any suggestions? Experiences?

I just picked up an Acer Aspire 3003CLi for $616 shipped (no tax) at Newegg. It has terrible battery life because of the 4 cell battery (<1.5 hours), but can be upgraded to a better 8 cell battery for under $100 on Ebay. Throw in some more RAM (it only comes with 256MB) and you've got a decent AMD Mobile Sempr0n based laptop for cheap. Of course you could pick up a Dell Inspiron 6000 for $799 and add on more memory, but chances are you'll have to pay shipping and handling and tax which will bump it up at least another $100.

It seems like a few around here have recently purchased Thinkpad R51e's which I believe are in the $750-$950 price-range. All seem to be extremely happy w/ the purchase. - I can vouch for Thinkpads in general being top notch in regards to liability and quality of workmanship.
