Styx: Master of Shadows

Looks like a sequel to "Of Orcs & Men"?
It's made by the same company, but it's not really a sequel, as gameplay is totally different (sort of like saying World of Warcraft is a sequel to Warcraft 3).

It's a purely (or mostly) stealth game. I was interested in it, but reviews seem to go for the mediocre, apparently the main complaint is its consolization (meaning long checkpoints where a mistake can make you lose 15 minutes or more of slow stealthy progress). Guess I'll try it when it goes for $5 on Steam.

There are already videos on youtube if you're not afraid of spoilers. Looks pretty good if you're into the stealth stuff.

Pretty sure it wasn't made by the same company. Of Orcs and Men was developed by Spiderweb Software, Styx was made by Cyanide Studios.

They're both French developers though so I suppose they might be related somehow.

Why do companies do this? Who the hell thinks checkpoints are a good idea on a PC game? Let people save when they want FFS.

You're right, I thought it was made by the same company because it's the same character, but guess they licensed it to another one. In any case the point was that it's not really a sequel, more like a 'side-quel' (did I just invent a term?)

On the steam sale that is ongoing for Spiderweb this game is mentioned. The studios seem to be linked in some way.

Yes, the two games are in the same universe and use some of the same characters.

Two in my regular gaming circle have spent a few hours playing this and both say it's fun.

While I agree that it should have the option for quick saves, I think checkpoints enhance stealth games. If you can quick save anywhere you want, it typically diminishes the threat of being caught, and with it goes a lot of the tension.

I agree, there is far less challenge to a game if you can just save wherever/whenever you want. Getting to a checkpoint and knowing your progress is safe can be a great feeling after a particularly difficult stretch of game, I recall lots of moments like that in the original Far Cry.

You can save and load the game anytime you want. I don't know where people are getting the idea that it's checkpoint saves only. I got the game today and have played for a few hours. Really enjoying it so far even though this is the first stealth game I've played in several years.

Already finished the game. Good story and workable mechanics but like many games including the Witcher 2 this game is short and is only about 15 to 25 hours of gameplay. Graphics are amazing however.
