StyleXP what, is this M$?

(Ok, if I'm in the wrong category, srry 'bout that)

Followed the linkies to some really cool XP themes. followed the instructions and downloaded StyleXP I was sent here and installed it so the themes would work....

Today, I get nice little reminders that I haven't paid for it yet everytime I boot??????

Well, this caught me off guard so I went to the site where I downloaded it from (see link above)..... There is NO mention of a fee in the links you follow to the download...

now, of course when I followed a different link (sales: Registration) it explains that all Beta versions are time limited............

This is how M$ markets......... "oh yeah, did you not search every possible link to see if we had a hook waiting for you?"

Ok, so maybe I am gullible, perhaps even ignorant... but this is sleazy marketing

Well the luna doesn't look so bad now......

yeah, it was wierd...

If you can help me learn how to enjoy StyleXP themes without paying $20.00 I would greatly appreciate it.

maybe a linky to where you got yours? Or a tip to help me put the nags to death?

I downloaded and installed the program without any trouble. At the end it asked me if I wanted to purchase a code ($19.95) which unlocks the time restriction which is indeed 30 days. It was pretty obvious and I didn't get a sense of foul marketing here. I like the product and I think 20 bucks is not a huge price to pay for something so neat; of course, if there is an alternative then...

There's a discussion going on at Neowin about this issue. It's in the "Customizing XP" forum. There's a way to hack the "msstyles.dll" to make unregistered themes work without the "StylesXP" program. There's also comments to the effect that the maker of the program is letting it be used for free since it's still a beta. Go to Neowin and read up on it. I use the hacked dll method and it works great.

do you mean help you get it for free without paying for it. isn't that stealing someones work?. if you like it, pay for it. how hard can that be? sheesh if you don't like to pay for your apps or games switch to linux, you can even get the OS for free.

Thanks for the info.

Yep, it would be stealing someone else's work. That's why I chose to uninstall rather than hack. I was just interested when it seemed like some peeps got no nag screens without ripping anyone off and that was what I hoped for.

Anyway, I really don't want to pay 40 bucks (I have 2 computers here) to make my screens look nicer... not a rip off, just not right for me.....

However, I stand by my original statement that obscuring the fact that nag screens are going to appear and the app. is time limited is sleazy marketing

Why is it sleazy marketing? All shareware do this. Didn't you know this was a shareware despite the fact that the sales page clearly states that it's a shareware and unless you register by paying for the product, you will be reminded to register repetedly? Was this your first time downloading a shareware? Next time, you better do your homework before bashing out a company.

Normal path to the file is first to the homepage of TGTsoft, then to the products page, (no mention of shareware there. They call it a BETA.......... ) then the downloads page (no mention of shareware there either). What, do you work for these folks or something.....?

wanna pretend this is normal... fine..... but I disagree!....? how many times do you expect to pay when they call their application beta and the word shareware is NEVER used (well unless you browse to unrelated pages looking for it)?

I don't know why you are offended by my remarks, but not too many people go browsing an entire site map in a case like this.... (which is what you would have to do to find out this is a retail product as opposed to the BETA it is advertised to be)

I met that as well last night on my desktop. But my laptop runs fine withouth this annoying 'notice'. And I installed XP on my desktop later after I bought the laptop. So... I believe the reason is that you are running a newer version of StyleXP which is not free anymore. I still have to confirm this though.

Some people just see what they want to see, I have no trouble seeing "Sales: Registration*Order*Corporate" which completely explains the cost/functionality of the product.

Apparently you also think that if a developer actually wants you to pay for their work, well they MUST be in bed with M$ as well.

Look either pay the developer their measly $20 for their hard work, or don't, its up to you, but you look like an idiot trying to defend your ignorance.

Mine says its $20.00 for a one year subscription, so apparently its not a one time fee.

Just thought Id add that so everyone knows what to expect when their year is up also.

I would be much more comfortable with a one time fee.

And YES, the popup reminder caught me off guard also, I didnt realize we were gonna have to pay $20.00 a year either.

Kinda made me mad cuz I PAID the creator of the xbox theme to make me that style in orange, blue & red and now Im not even using it!
(btw: after i paid for those xbox styles, the creator did ask my permission to make them available to everyone and I agreed, so no flaming Drewster2100 over there, ok? If you want a custom style/theme made drewster is the man to contact, he does great work IMO)

And Ill be darned if I can find the thread about that .dll hack , im going to search that board again.

Well DUH!
Sometimes Im so stupid, i fool myself into thinking I know what Im doing. 😉

I found the thread & the .dll hack, thanks RalfHutter.

Is this the .dll file that allows you to use the downloaded xp themes without a 3rd party program? I think I have a link for that at home, but am unsure of what it does.

Yes, it shows you how to modify the original Micro$oft "uxtheme.dll" file so you can use other (read: non-M$) themes.

The original Tgtsoft "StylesXP" betas patched this dll. The newest version (shareware or whatever it is) of the software does it some other way.

If this is what they want to charge for, fine, but I can't see charging for hacking a dll that you can do yourself with any of the available resource hacking apps.

Well hell, why don't I just post the hack and noone will even have to search for it. Here it is:

"UxTheme.dll Unlocked... step by step

I got tired of all the lame people asking for cracks or serials to TGTsoft's StylesXP. StylesXP was originally a modified dll, and a dll you can make yourself. I even provided that dll to people so they could use any msstyle they want, however these same people insisted on being lame and wanting to warez stylesxp even after I provided the legal unlocked dll. I was even accused of working for TGTsoft after I stated that you can do this yourself and provided the dll. Those lame people just don't get it, maybe I should have named this thread "Make your own warez."

Satire aside, here is how you all can make your own UxTheme.dll that allows you to use any .msstyle theme without StylesXP. This just removes the MS requirement for digital signing on the dll. I was not the original genious who figured out where in the dll the digital signing resided.

1) Backup UxTheme.dll to UxTheme.000

2) Don't blame me if you screw this up, these directions are as is in their somewhat correctness and I am not responsible for the government raid that will happen if you conduct this change. I have tested this and it works for me and the 500 other folks who have used this method. Do not put tinfoil in the microwave.

This is very simple to do and amuonts to changes to 17 values and takes less than five minutes to do. This also assumes you don't have StylesXP installed on your system and that you are working with the original UxTheme.dll

3) Open UxTheme.000 in a hex editor, not resource hacker.

4) Replace the following 4 sections in the hex code with the values I provide. You will need to use the

search function in the editor to find the exact address within the file to perform each edit

Adress: 0x00009C27
Original: 02
New Value: 00

Address: 0x0000B624 --> 0x0000B629
Original: 0F 8C 80 00 00 00
New Value: 90 90 90 90 90 90

Adress: 0x0000B6BB --> 0x0000B6C2
Original: 81 EC 80 00 00 00 56 57
New Value: 33 F6 8B C6 C9 C2 08 00

Address: 0x0000B71E --> 0x0000B71F
Original: 7C 38
New Value: 90 90

5) Check your changes, make sure you did not use the letter O in place of zero. SAVE

6) Reboot to safe mode, rename UxTheme.dll to UxTheme.bak ... and rename UxTheme.000 to UxTheme.dll

7) Let me know if it works, I just made this up so I am curious to see what happens.

//////////////////////////MORE//////////////////////////////////DOWN///////////////////////////HERE//////////////////////////

Anyway, I found the EASIEST way to replace the DLL - no safe mode, boot CD etc. You need the hacked DLL and the installation file of StylesXP Beta 3. Here's what to do:

1. Install StylesXP Beta 3.
2. Rename hacked UxTheme.dll to UxTheme.dll.tgtbak
3. Copy and Paste UxTheme.dll.tgtbak into C:\Windows\System32, overwriting the old file.
4. Uninstall StylesXP Beta 3. Restart.

StylesXP will attempt to replace the hacked DLL with it's backup, however it will in fact replace it with another copy of the hacked DLL and StylesXP will also uninstall "

just substituted for the HACKED dll

no system resources used whatsoever now...sweet.

all u do is get the hacked uxtheme.dll, rename it to uxtheme.new (or whatever)
reboot into safe mode - command prompt
change directory x:\windows\system32 (i.e. 'cd c:\windows\system32')
rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.bak
rename uxtheme.new to uxtheme.dll

reboot.

all is well..all is free...

Since people keep emailing & asking me....

Ill be darned if I can remember exactly where I got that hacked UXtheme.dll, so a direct link would help others, I wish I could post it.
Maybe someone else can? 😉
(I know that was pretty stupid to not save the link, my bad)

In the meantime, if anyone needs the already hacked UxTheme.dll, just email me & id be happy to send it to ya.
