STW, WMP 9, & Roxio 6

While playing Shogun Total War, I noticed that I sometimes get screeching sounds instead of speech (game audio files are MP3), and when the MPEG movies play, the screen flashes. After much tinkering, I narrowed the problem down to Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6. Problem only happens when its installed. So I checked File Association for every single media type, and Roxio's Audio Central is not the default player for any of them (WMP is). And when I play the audio files in question manually with WMP, they work fine. But in-game they don't (if Roxio is installed).

Am I missing something? Is there an option in Windows XP to set a general "default media player" in addition to File Association for each type? Any other suggestions as to what the problem might be and/or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's probably not a default shell file-type association, it's probably a media-type/fourcc codec association.
You could use "G-Spot" to get a list of all installed codecs, with and without Roxio installed, and compare them to see what's changed.
