this is annoying

when using high quality mode on windows media player, certain files, usually of the MPEG-4 variety stutter and stammer like mad when i try to play them...

i have a video of what i mean so you can see, but currently having problems accessing my webspace. so anyone willing to host for me, will be much appreciated (its a 2mb file)

Your drivers are most likely the reason, you might want to do a google search, i think ive heard of this before. Just out of curiousity what drivers are you using?

Otis i think i know what you are talking about.

Are you watching a video and suddenly the video will get really slow and stuttery while the audio keeps going? If so then i have that same problem with my 5900XT in WMP. I think i need to reinstall because none of our other cards seem to have that problem.

Same here. Ill, hopefully, be reinstalling soon. I think it is just some bad setting we cant find. Our Geforce 4's dont have that problem and they are on the same drivers. I believe the files i am trying to watch are in MPEG 2 though.

This, at least for me, happens in both High Quality and Overlay mode.

Edit: Actually, i somehow got it to stop this by installing an AC3 codec for WMP. However, it is very apparent in PowerDVD. The fix i use is to rewind for a second and then put it back at normal. That usually fixes it for ~1 minute. :-

This is likely to be a software configuration issue, not a hardware issue.

I'd start by completely uninstalling your current video drivers, run drivercleaner through, then reinstall.

After that, check that al your video codecs are up to date and working correctly.

If you want hosting space, try www.rapidshare.de, you can use the site in free mode (with some restrictions compared to membership, but it should work for hosting your file temporarily).

Otis you may want to try downloading an AC3 Filter. For whatever reason it solved my problem in WMP, but the problem still persists in PowerDVD. You dont have anything to lose.

Ill try to find a link for you.

ahhh more wierdness....installed the AC3, didnt do anything, but when i play in full screen its fine. its just when its in windowed mode or what ever its called.

Do you have dual monitors by any chance? That might be somehow confusing VMR...I don't know. Anyhow do you have any need for 'high quality mode?' Only thing it really changes in WMP is that you can now take screenshots, but you could still with Overlay using Ctrl+I anyway.

Try Media Player Classic and its various VMR output options. Tell us which ones lag and which ones don't.
