Stuttering in games

Have a Gigabyte MB (Kt333 chipset), Athlon XP2400, SSB Audigy soundcard, OCZ 3200 DDR Sdram 256 Mbs.Geforce 4 4400 Leadtek video card, running nvdia driver 41.72 version. Reformatted and reinstalled with direct X9, latest drivers, etc. Not overclocking. Ran sisoft and 3dmark..Scores were in normal range for hardware installed...ANy ideas? Tried running default (failsafe) settings in bios; no change.

Please give more info on your exact problem. Do you mean low FPS? Or are you talking about the type of stuttering that isn't caused by FPS, and is common with the R300?

What resolution are you running your games at? AA and AF on?

Turns out that I had adjusted memory timings in bios to the most aggressive setting. One of the settings was either 1T or 2T...When I changed it to 2T, most of theproblems disappeared. Changing the memory to run at 133 Mhz., instead of 166 asychronously, improved stability even further. I finally got in touch with Gigabyte's tech support and he strongly suggested that I reformat and install WinXP, rather than WIn98. He expalined that WIn98 has issues when cpu's get above 2.0-2.1 gigahertz. I took his suggestion and it's running beautifully; better than on the best day with 98. Thanks for you input.

I'm glad you figured out the problem. However, my 7 year old son's rig is running 2.1GHz with Win98 and it runs fine. I would have to question the validity of Gigabyte's tech support answer about issues with any OS and higher cpu speeds.

He's right, Windows 98 can have issue with CPUs above 2.1 GHz because one of the timers can yield a division by zero error.

Microsoft has issued a fix for Windows 95/98 to address the issue.
