The world is now a racer shorter than it was 2hrs ago. The setup: two lane road, double-yellow line, school zone, traffic in both directions, 1 hotshot. Some guy in a late model candy apple red SS Camaro thought he was too cool for the speed limit and tried to pass some cars in a school zone...at 80mph w/ a on-coming traffic..which happened to be my parents. -_- Well my dad swerved out of the way and fortunately neither one of them was hurt. The same can't be said for speedracer. Realizing he was an idiot he locked the breaks and made a B-line for a rather sizable pine tree which took him from 70-0 in no time flat. They were still pulling the car out of the tree when my parents came back by an hour and a half later.

What the hell does ABS have to do with this story???????

Because the OP said the guy locked the brakes.

To be honest, I would expect that car to have ABS, and its a possibility that the person was not an experienced driver, and so didn't know how ABS works (pumps the pedal in most cars giving intermittent braking to prevent locking), and might have taken his foot off the break thinking they were messing up. So in that case, ABS might have been the reason for it. Although, then there shouldn't have been any way he locked the brakes up (which may or may not have happened).

Holy crap, i'm glad he didn't hurt anybody else, though it sucks he had to learn his lesson the hard way. Would have been more satisfying if he had needed to learn the lesson from the inside of a jail cell for a few years though, at least then we could gloat over his stupidity without the shadow of a life needlessly lost hanging over things.

If it weren't such a serious subject, I'd say this begged a parody thread written by the distraught passenger (gf?) in the camaro about how some crazy old folks ran her law-abiding boyfriend off the road. Oh well. Glad to hear your parents are okay.

I will admit I was not there and all the info is coming from my dad. He said he heard the tires squeal and saw smoke in his mirror before the car hit the tree. I took that to mean the breaks locked.

Yeah, I didn't mean to make it sound like I was calling you a liar or anything. Anytime you slow like that, chances are tires are gonna squeal nicely and probably see some smoke, but it doesn't necessarily mean the brakes were locked. It's really inconsequential though, because either way, the driver was an idiot.

Nah, I think the worst thing to hit is nothing... for the next few-hundred-foot freefall.

Instead of jail they should fine him a HUGE amount of money.

This is reckless driving. Not street racing.

Both are stupid, but next time you rant get yourself in order.

Actually ABS is a built in system that pumps the brakes for you. ABS replaced the need to pump the brakes. And I will tell you the first time I had ABS activate on me it scared me for a second because all of a sudden while braking you roll forward then it brakes again.
