Stupidest question for buddy to ask when you accidently get signed out of an IM client and then sign back in.

Stupidest question would be, "Did you sign off?" but even that can be valid with iffy internet connections.

In other words, like Technoob said, it's a valid question.

Why is it a stupid question? I know sometimes my internet will shit the bed and people will have sent me messages during that time that I don't receive. I ask the same question if I send someone a message and then like 5 seconds later they sign off and then back on again.

EDIT: I guess this wouldn't be a problem with MSN (and Yahoo?), since messages you received when offline are given to you when you sign on. But you can still miss messages.

its not stupid. in my case, me and my buddies all use google talk, which lets you signed in from multiple different PCs in different locations. Between my laptops, desktops, blackberries, any remnant Gmail sessions left open in a browser, and hell, even the HTPC, I would get the missed messages there when I signed off by accident or if something was disconnected by accident. Since I'm signed into the account from other PCs, Google simply dumps the "missed" IMs to the other sessions and won't let me know when I reconnect. They will probably see me became idle for a second or so then reconnected, and if i didn't respond in time, they would ask if I had received the said message.

so yes, it is a very valid question.

When someone asks me that, I always just copy/paste the last few lines I received before signing off. I guess technically it's not what they're asking for but I think it's what both of us are wondering (which is what the last thing I receive was).

If he signs off, usually the other person would understand that when he asks that, he must've said something else. Quick recap of sentences would show where they both stand and it goes from there.

I love it when my connection to AIM or Yahoo goes down, and the remote clients don't reflect it until some timeout period has lapsed, and messages sent in the interim are lost. Then we've gotta play the "please re-send your last transmission(s)..." game. Sigh. The question is valid, but is phrased poorly.
