Stupid wide-mouth cans...

Why did just about every beverage manufacturer switch to the wide-mouth cans? I find it near-impossible to open them without getting drops of the drink on my hand. It's not a big deal, really, but it seems like a simple redesign would fix this. Does anyone else have this problem or am I just dumb? Is there a secret to it?
