Trillian has the worst interface I've ever seen. I can't figure out these damn preferences at all.

Anyway, how do you get buddy icons in Trillian? I have one for AIM but no one can see it when I use Trillian, so I'm assuming I either need to load it into Trillian myself or I can't have an icon at all?

Trillian --> My Identity information --> my icon

(I think)

I just changed mine from the default so I'm not acutally sure it's working.

Really... Trillian's control panel is a little... odd... but it's not *that* hard to figure out. ;)

Woot!

As Raiden256 mentioned earlier today, I have copied him and set my picture of my eye as my icon :p

I was using AIM until they started having ads with audio. I had a couple bad experiences of ad audio going off at extremely loud volumes so I had to ditch it.

What's a better AIM alternative? (I'm hardly attached to Trillian after a few months of using it)

Well I use a funny skin, and with this skin there's no top taskbar, so the "trillian" menu wasn't visible. I had to change over to default skin, change my icon from there, then change back skins.

Then I realized it shows the icon on the window of this skin at all times.

Yes, sing with me ladies, Mrvile is a fvcktard.

Folks tell me that Gaim and DeadAIM are better than Trillian, and are the best AIM replacement. I've used Trillian for over two years, and it's gotten all kinds of better in that time... but is now a bit of a memory hog. I decided to give Gaim a try... less than a month later, I'm back to Trillian. Gaim sucks.

Same...I stopped using AIM once I started getting popups when I accidentally moused over the ads they play, but I'm so used to the AIM interface, I'll probably never get used to anything else. I don't wanna install DeadAim cuz of that stupid ViewPoint crap AIM installs (and you have to install AIM for DeadAim I believe), so I'm stuck with Trillian.

I tried Gaim about a year ago and it scared the bejesus out of me. Nevar, evar going near Gaim again.

Try Gaim. gaim.sourceforge.org Going from AIM to gaim isn't quite like going from IE to Firefox; but it's still a pleasant move.

how is trillian a memory hog? mine is only using 9MB. if you can't spare 9MB you need a new computer.

also if you don't use MSN or yahoo you can disable those plugins to make it take up even less memory.

Gaim's "normal" user interface is great - I really like it. It's relatively fast, too.

The largest faults I have with Gaim are:

1) Not being able to direct connect with AIM users
2) Not being able to use the "send file" feature over AIM
3) Account management / connections are just a PITA...

Mine is 6.5 mb.

Maybe I'll check out gaim sometime (but now I've spent so much time customizing my trillian install with a new icon :p)

Surprised someone hasn't brought up Miranda yet. Miranda is a decent, but barebones, AIM client.

I want to be able to do feature #2 still :(

Eh... memory hog isn't the term that I was looking for. Right now trillian.exe is using 6420 K on my PC.

"fvcking slower than moses" describes it more accurately.

I'm running an Athlon XP 1800+ (at 1.53 GHz) with 512 MB of RAM... and it takes Trillian a LONG time to open and close windows - and if I turn on tabbed chatting, then I just give up... because I'm sitting there forever waiting for it to finish creating the window(s). It also takes forever to load.

I was previously running a P4 @ 1.8 GHz w/ 1 GB of RAM... and noticed absolutely no speed problems with Trillian at all.

I've had success with all of the above using the latest version of Trillian. Note *LATEST VERSION*. Older versions were notorious for having poor handling of #1 and #2 as well.
