Stupid Serial Question

Ok, it turns out that there are stupid questions, and I don't know the answers. 😱

Is there a device that can change a USB port to a legacy serial port, or a PCMCIA card that can do the trick? An acquaintance has a new laptop with USBs and no legacy serial port but wants to hook up an older gizmo that uses a serial interface. I haven't heard of anything that would work but thought I'd ask, and this seems to be the place.

Any info will be appreciated.
