I just got a job at best buy and today was my first shift. A guy who had been in computers for 7 months asked me "do you know anything about video cards?" At which point I got quite excited and said yes.

His response was "good, cause there's some people looking at them and I don't know anything about them."

I had always heard about horror stories about stupid salesmen. Now I belive every one of them.

What's the name of that game that is sorta like Counter Strike but it's WW2 themed?

Not in comparison to others I have heard, no. But the fact he doesn't know anything about one of the only computer components they sell is just f-ing sad.

Nope, after talking with him for a bit I could clearly see that he wasn't. He couldn't remember some of the parts in his own computer...

Same thing for another salesman who I thought looked like a big nerd. Apparently he has the BFG 9200 pro. I couldn't convince him otherwise.

Yep, I was in denial for quite a while, thinking they knew something. Unfortunitally that wasn't the case. I really would have liked to see how he would have answered their questions though. Then mabye I would have had a true horror story.

Maybe he was the salesman who says "Digital phones are great cause you have a bunch of 1's and 0's going back and forth between the phone and the headset."

That sentance doesn't even make sence... between the phone and the headset? Mabye between the two cell phones, but the user doesn't recognized an increase in voice quality in that case any way I belive. Just more calls can be put on the same tower if the calls are digital... or am I completely wrong?

Well, here is how the rest of my day went... if that is an ending.

I sold the guy an aiw 9800pro that BB had on sale.

The head of computers told me not to talk to customers anymore until he had properly trained me in selling methods (ie. forcing product service plans on people).

He was talking to the same guy for like the last 2 hours of my shift, so I did almost nothing. But I saw a guy who was looking at sound cards and all the other employees were talking in a group doing nothing, so I helped him. I sold him an audigy 2 zs after telling him he would pay 130 dollars more for the "Platinum" and the only differance would be a remote and a live drive (or whatever they call the front audigy plates).

And that's pretty much all I did in 4 hours.

Ya, I know. But I looked around before I told him that. I am stuggling with my morals... I don't want people to buy crap they don't need, but I dont' want to get fired either. I am hopeing to find a happy medium :p

One of Best Buy's slogans is that there is non-commissioned sales staff. Personally I don't mind doing nothing, even if I know more about computers then the rest of the "product specialists."

I get paid 8.50 an hour, but I just have it as a job while I am in university for the winter, I am just working like one or two shifts a week until school starts and my summer job ends.

I have a much better, full time, higher paying job for the summer which I am currently working at.

Good Job Cawchy87, tell the manager where it's at. The customers need more like you....
