Stupid RC5 Question

What is the difference between a block and a packet?

I quote from the dnet FAQ-o-matic:
"block: an old term used for packet.
packet: a discrete unit of work which will be processed. Clients send, recieve and crunch in terms of packets. A packet might contain more than one work-unit."

Makes them sound like the same thing... But I uploaded something like 30 completed RC5 packets yesderday and in the stats it shows that I completed 574 blocks.

No such thing as a stupid question you know, only stupid answers 😉

A packet as you have noticed is a packet of blocks, and can be anything from 1x2^28keys - 32x2^28keys (one block = 1x2^28keys)... I generally recommend that you configure your client to ask for 32x2^28 packets as those put less strain on the keyserver, they take longer to crack tho' 😉

To configure your client to request large packets put this in the appropriate section in your dnetc.ini:

[rc5]
preferred-blocksize=33

Restart your client and you're all set and will recieve mostly packets of 32 blocks 🙂
