On a fresh installation of XP one is given the option of a quick format of the disk or one that takes a long time to complete. What's the difference? (other than the time it takes.) Thanks.
If you are confident the hard drive is in perfect working condition use quick. The difference between the regular format versus the quick format is whether or not the volume is scanned for bad sectors using the chkdsk command. Both methods remove the files from the volume.
Thanks for the info. I guess if it's a used drive one should use the long method. If bad sectors are found will the drive mark them as bad and not use them? Again, thanks much.
Personally I wouldn't trust a single badblock check, I usually run some benchmarks on my new drives for at least 24hrs before putting them into production.
