Stupid question

I got a motherboard from someone who put RTV all over the CPU socket. It didn't cure properly and is just smeared all over and in the socket. Am I screwed or can it be cleaned?

TIA, Barry

I'm not sure what you'd use to get that all out of the socket. Perhaps you could go to a site like the Loctite one where they make silicones and other sealants. May offer ways to remove the stuff. The main thing is is that you don't want the remover to damage the socket or other mobo components. It can probably be done, but whether the time and effort will be worth it is left for you to ponder.

Unfortunately it still isn't cured so the previous owner's suggestion to just peel it off won't work. It just smears everywhere. I've removed the moveable portion of the socket (it's 462 BTW) and the stuff is all down in there too. <sigh>
I'll check out Loctite and stuff later. Thanks!
Hopefully someone here will have had experience with this problem.

I was waiting for a more detailed explaination and hearing it has gotten down in amoungst the pin contacts is bad news.

If you find anything to clean it up, let us know. Along with Zepper's rec on looking into what Loctite offers, email Arctic Silver about thier cleaning products. They might have something to offer.

You really should READ THE THREAD before posting.

Thanks.
I didn't think my question worthy of the forum. I put it here because the issue comes from the board's previous owner's intention of using Tec cooling, requiring absolutely no moisture around the CPU. He used RTV and it didn't cure. Now it's all over the socket and I want it gone. <sigh>
