Stupid question, will an 8X card work on a 4X MB?

before I updated my Rig, I had a 9700 pro running on and old MOBO with 4X AGP without an hassale ... and whatI have seen,not a huge difference in 4X and 8X.... the possible bottle neck is the CPU+mobo combo
