[Stupid Question] Why is alot of internet access "asychronous"

why is it that most broadband service has a download speed faster than the upload? The data is travelling through the same pipe right? Is it a difference in how the data is routed once it reaches your ISP's central offices? Is it a difference in equipment that handles upload there that justifies it's higher cost? Or is it just a artificial barrier to deter people from running things like web services form their home?

Most likely a combination of all three.

Network gear is almost never asymetrical in bandwidth.

I do believe it is a limit in the technology for HFC networks (cable broadband) and possibly DSL as well. don't know the deep technical details of those technologies however.

one other thing: think about the "average" user...most of their upstream requests are small and are for more bandwidth intensive content coming back so it makes sense to limit the uploadspeed to benefit the download speeds. it just more efficient use of bandwidth.

That is a function of dropped packets. You are dropping your acknoledgements to the server. The server then says "hey, he's not getting this...I better slow down. WAY down" Man, he's missing like 50% of his acknoledgements. The only way I can complete this transfer is if I send him one packet at a time, very slowly.
