Can they be played on a PC without a DVD drive. IE: can they be played form a cd-rom? Will Media Player 7.1 play them? I want to convert some older home movies to VCD because the tapes are beginning to fall apart.

This shows you how much i know about them...

You can play VCDs with Windows Media Player, insert the VCD and locate the dat file in the MPEGAV folder and open it. With some really good player like PowerDVD or Cinematograph it's just to insert the VCD and hit play and it will autoplay the VCD. Use a low resolution, like 640x480, on the monitor when watching a VCD to get best quality. If you have problems playing VCDs on your computer read this.

the version of VCD that requires a DVD drive is called "DVD". VCD stands for Video CD. Note the "CD"

I would PM you but I've reached my PM limit (once again) so I thought I'd post in public for all to see.

I would buy any of these DVD Players from Amazon.com using their $10 off $75 coupon code, PM me your e-mail address and I'll e-mail you the coupon code. Also you'll recieve free shipping:
1. Panasonic DVD-RV31K DVD-Video Player with MP3 Playback (Black)
2. Toshiba SD2710 DVD-Video Player with MP3 Playback
3. Panasonic DVD-RV31S DVD-Video Player with MP3 Playback (Silver)
4. Pioneer DV-343 DVD-Video Player with VCD Playback
5. Toshiba SD2715 DVD/CD 5 Disc Carousel Player with DVD-R/MP3 Playback

These can be found here look in the middle right underneath Our Top Sellers. I'd go for the 1) Panasonic or 2) Toshiba.

All of these should be under $200 shipped.

You will need to buy a VCD-Rom drive to play vcd's, or else it will be bad quality and jerky. You should go get one so that it has dedicated hardware.

I have the Pioneer DV-343 and it plays both VCD's and SVCD's great. I have encoded some SVCDs with pretty high bitrates and it has been able to play all of them except one without a problem, although I think that one was due to a temporal smoother. I had an Apex AD-500W and it was also a fine player.

Since you're looking for a DVD Player just thought I'd let you know that Amazon.com is having a DVD Player Sale and is offering free shipping with most purchases. Plus there's an Amazon.com $20 off $99 coupon code which expires tonight (search Google.com for Amazon.com coupon or PM me for the coupon code).

This brings the Panasonic DVD-RV31K down to $119.99 with free shipping after coupon!
