Stupid question regarding reformatting...

Hi,

I've got a HD that is partitioned into C:, D:, and E:

I have WinXP Pro (copy) on C: with a few programs on it. D: contains most of my programs, and E: has data files.

I would like to reinstall WinXP since I have a legal copy now, so I am wondering if I can just reformat C: and install or will this cause problems with the programs on D:?

TIA!

If these programs store their settings, etc. in the registry, yes.

Otherwise, probably not.

Most modern and mainstream programs enter data into the registry to store their settings. You will likely have to reinstall the apps and reset how you had the settings and preferences etc. Data should be fine, as long as it is not on the drive you format.

Cant you simply do an upgrade re install on your current windows installation?

That way u might get to keep the programs and your settings...

Is your goal simply to upgrade from an illegal copy to a legal copy?

If so, this is easy and you won't lose data or settings.

First, boot into the existing OS and log on as admin. Insert your new XP CD. Click install on the splash screen, then select an upgrade install.

Setup will "upgrade" your existing OS to the version on the CD, which in this case isn't really an upgrade at all, but that's the way it works.
