I am sort of baffled needing to ask this....

Logic says that ANY USB headset must have an integrated audio chip, right, because they're not connected to a sound card?

Yes, a USB headset, USB speaker, or other USB Audio Device would have to have an Analog-Digital converter.

You could also just get a USB to 3.5mm audio adapter if you want to use regular headset or speakers. They can be found for less than $10.

On the downside, if you have a quality soundcard with good DACs and/or headphone amp and/or DSPs etc, then that's all bypassed and wasted. On the upside, if your system has a terrible, low quality, noisy analogue output to start with, you might end up with better sound, especially if it's a decent USB headset.
I have a Logitech USB headset that retails I think for about $20 and it has pretty great audio and a built-in microphone

I once had a Logitech g930 usb headset that was okay for gaming but lacked the audio quality for music compared to a wired headset such as a beyerdynamic. In the end it really comes down to what you, the user, are willing to accept so try whatever you're considering out for yourself. I tried an astro a50 for about two weeks after the logitechs and they didn't work correctly which is what led me to beyerdynamic dt990 pro 250 ohm headset I use now.
