Theres just a few PCI modems thats hardware based modems. Yours aint one of them I know that chipset and its most def a winmodem. If your looking for a good PCI hardware modem get the 3com gaming modem. Or just buy a external serial Supraexpress 56e.

<< Well most PCI = WinModem >>

Well, most modems in general nowadays are HST (HSP??) modems (software modems)... the term winmodem is something that US Robotics came up with for their line of software modems. And not all PCI modems are winmodems BTW.

yeh most PCI's modems are winmodems. You can just look at the card itself. If it is very bare only a couple of chips then it is a winmodem.

All the PCI modems I have seen are Winmodems! But there are plenty others which I have not seen... But most of them are Winmodems if they use PCI. Hardware ones use ISA I think, well some of the Hardware ones are ISA.

Two hardware based PCI modems.

actiontec

USR

I went from a ISA USR hardware modem to a DSI(creative) PCI winmodem. Pings went from 100 to 300 and there is noticeably more lag when 4 or 5 browser windows are all open and downloading then with the USR.

Who knows, maybe a LT modem would work better but the last one I tried would not connect over 33K.

PCI does not always = WinModem

Yes the majority of PCI modems happen to be WinModems but that is simply because Joe Average doesn't know what hardware he's buying and doesn't know the difference.

Actiontec and USR/3COM among others both make Hardware PCI Modems.

For example from USR/3COM you have current models 2976 and 5610.

That's like saying External = Serial

Which also isn't true, External can be Serial or USB.

You can often tell by looking at the card. If it's got a lot of crud soldered on it, it's very likely a hardware modem. If it looks rather barren, it's a software modem.

But then, I haven't used a modem in years, I'm just assuming this still holds true. :)
