I rent a cable modem and I'm gonna buy a new one instead of renting. What do I have to tell the cable company or is there nothing to worry about as long as the modem is compatiable with the service (it is).

You might have to call and have them validate the new modem. If necessary, it's a quick procedure that takes only a minute or two.

Well when I bought mine I had to give them the MAC address of the new modem. (Charter Cable)

Some cable companies also have a list of "supported modems." You have to get one on the list if you want any type of help getting it to work.
