Stupid question (GNU n00b)

I'm so lost here . . . how do I unlock/"unzip" the file format that GIMP comes in? I don't think WinRAR or WinZip opens it, does it . . ..

Help?

you, sir, are a forumnazi.

And yet, still willing to help if you provide any of the above information.

And yes, I read through the Software forum quite frequently.

Even though I called you a forumNazi, you provided all the help I needed . . ..

(I htink I just had the wrong format 😱)

Thanks, mr. Nazi.

yeah - I originally had the tar.gz format, and had no clue what to do with it . . .. 😕
Oh well. It's installed and running fine now.

(I'm thinking I'm going to have to get photoshop . . . I'm too used to the adobe layout . . .🙁 )

The software forum is on my regular list of forums to patrol and help newbies and morons alike.

Not a NAZI, I just understand the point.

And while you are waiting for it compile I do:

apt-get install gimp

and design 50 graphics!

😛

And using a BSD, I have the choice of either compiling from source or using binary packages using the package management tools.

Not that I can use the gimp or similar programs well. 🙁

Hehe, I never said I could use them well either, but who in their right mind would want to compile something when there is a pre-compiled version that runs just fine 😉

I do it occassionally to test things out, or to enable/disable specific things that there is no binary for. And while the gimp is compiling, I can install packages for kword and have several pages written by the time it's done. 😀

and you use an operating system who's last stable release was dec 2003 and you get binaries which are not optimized.

And yet they perform better than the s00p3r optimized gentoo installations. Go figure.

Hardly true, I've run both on the same machine and gentoo performs screamingly faster than Debian ever could. Also, have fun compiling the new GIMP with GTK1.2 lol.

Another correction, it was released July 19th, 2002 and was finally updated again October 24th 2004

Most benchmarks show Debian beating Gentoo. And who uses stable?

I don't know, perhaps it's because I use AMD on this box..

And while your point is valid about stable, up until recently unstable was so unstable that it was laughable. I've met Ian Murdock, had dinner with him actually, and I asked him what happened. He left to start Progeny Linux, and in so many words, told me he left the project completely and would recommend trying Progeny instead.

I don't use Debian anyways. 😛

😉

I haven't used FreeBSD in about a year now, how is it since 4.4?
I've been using OpenBSD and I kind of like it more

Not sure, I've been using OpenBSD since FreeBSD 3.something. 😀
