Stupid Question - DVD 8x to 4x compatibility?

Some DVD+R 8X (the one in particular I am thinking of is Memorex) say
"Attention 2.4/4x owners. Some DVD drives may not be able to write to these discs and may damage them or the drive" or something to that respect.

I assume DVD's are not the same as CDs and will not just automatically "slow the disc down" to a, say 4x if that's all the drive can handle?

The drives I seem to remember being listed on stuff like that is the Pioneer A03 and A04 drives, the laser would effectively lock up and overheat. A firmware update took care of it.

Thanks for the input folks. I'll just try buring one. Worst case, If my drive croaks (hope not, it's been a good unit) I'll just have to splurge that $70 and get a new dual layer DVD.

I just dug out a Memorex DVD+R and here's what it says:

If you currently own a 2.4x or 4x DVD+RW/+R drive you must upgrade your firmware. 2.4x and 4x write speed DVD+RW/+R drives sold by Memorex, Phillips, H/P, Verbatium, Sony, TDK and QPS require a drive firmware upgrade.
