Stupid question, do I really need the CDROM and SPDIF cables from my drives to my sound card?

I have 1 audio from my CDROM to my Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1 and I have a SPDIF going from my DVD drive to my sound card. Do I need these and if I remove them will I still get sound from the dvd and CDROM and will the sound be the same quality? I have a set of Logitech Z560 speakers 4.1 so I dunno if I need either of the cables

If you are using analog audio & remove the CDA cable you will no longer have audio. If you're using digital audio (via the IDE bus) you can remove the cable without incident.

As for the S/PDIF, I dunno... Are you concerned about CD audio or DVD audio?

I don't connect any cables from my CD-ROM to my sound card... digital audio works just fine.

I have some experience in this department. You do NOT need to have either an mpc or spdif cable connected to the sound card/cd-rom if using mediaplayer7+, winME, winXP. the analog and digital audio is carried through the IDE interface and directed to the sound processor.

<< Wouldnt running digital audio create more overhead for the CPU also though? Just a thought >>

well digital audio via the IDE bus .. yes, and it would add extra overhead to that bus as well , but .. on a modern cpu its not that big of a deal .. but if i wanted to have digital audio i would use 2 pin digital audio on the cdrom .. question is, do you have digital speakers? .. if not, then the only benefit you will see from using digital audio to the card, is the decrease in interference, as of course analog is more susceptible to interference .. but if u have analog speakers, you will still get analog sound .. good luck ..
