Stupid Question? Can you run a P4 3.0GHz (800FSB) CPU at P4 3.06 (533FSB) spec?

I want to purchace a new P4 3.xx GHz processor but dont really want to change my motherboard at the moment. I have an ASUS P4T533-C. It is likely that I will upgrade the mobo in months to come but I was "wondering" if it is possible to run a 800FSB cpu on this board... :frown:

You can, but it will run at 2GHz.

No, just on 845 series and 865/875 series motherboards. There are no Rambus motherboards (850/E or SiS R658) or any other motherboards (SiS 655) that can reliably run an official 800MHz FSB processor. We've tried quite a lot. :) You may be able to get an SiS 655 board to work at 800MHz FSB, but it probably won't be stable, and even if it is (doubtful) you won't be able to overclock much (at all perhaps).

Go with an 845PE (ABIT BH7 is your best bet), 865G/P/PE/whatever else, or 875P motherboard if you want to use an 800MHz FSB CPU.

Thanks for that. I bought the 533FSB version so I can keep my P4T533-C for a while longer. I have decided that the the next mobo will possibly be the ASUS P4C800 but it's hard to throw away my RDRAM!!! (particularly as I paid a fortune for it) :frown:
