I read lot of tutorials that tell me to go there. How do I go there? That's always where I hit a wall because I can never do those steps. Assuming they're talking about system found in the start menu, well I don't have Administration.

In fact why do they have System and Settings, then there's Settings manager, then Settings editor. They really should put all this stuff in one spot. I'm using Xubuntu.

Sounds like you're following Gnome2 instructions, maybe Gnome3. You'll have to free form it a bit going to a different desktop, and the tools may not be the same.

Damn, quite an ordeal for that ( why hpcups is awesome), but anyway the reason that doesn't work is because its for Ubuntu version 7. Now the directions may still be applicable, but the location of system settings has changed. I have no idea what xubuntu looks like, but what you are looking for is either just 'settings' 'system settings' or maybe even just 'printer'. On unity its easy to search for that. I'd also do a search for directions on setting up said scanner on Ubuntu 12.04, might not be anything or there might be an easier way.

Just an example...

Just googled "ubuntu scanner brother MFC" or something to that extent. (specific model does not bring much, nor does saying xubuntu)

But now that I think about it I scan something maybe twice a year, not sure why I'm bothering to try, I'll just dual boot to Windows when I need to scan something. :p

Do I do get lot of other situations where it asks me to go to administration, which I can't find anywhere. Stuff in Linux is rarely obvious so I always find myself googling even the simplest tasks, such as this example of getting a scanner to work.

I think it might be equivalent to: xfce menu -> system -> printers or printing or printers and scanners on your DE.

I usually run xsane from a terminal and there is my scanner.

I haven't used XFCE in a while, but with other DEs if you right click on the menu and there should be an option to modify the appearance of the menu, there is typically an option to show or hide certain menu items. It's possible the system administration item is hidden for some reason.
