iis there a general consensus on which one out there is best and which one is best value?

BenQ are pretty much top of the pile, NEC are a very close second.

Never had any problems with my NEC, but fortunately, most burners are pretty decent nowadays... Look for a quality brand (BenQ, NEC, LiteOn...) and take whichever one is cheapest...

I think Liteon is one of the best makers of DVD burners. I love mine. I believe there is one listed on the For sale/Trade forun for sale right now. You might want to check it out. Its the same model I own and mine works great.
