Stupid question about plexiglass...

Why is every part of it except the edges transparent? Is it because you're looking through less of it, i.e. if you had a cube of plexiglass it would be equally transparent no matter how you looked at it? That was my initial thought but it doesn't seem right because if you look at the edges from different angles the opaqueness doesn't change.

Plexiglass is cool. It allows for the coolest game on earth.
 
Real glass isn't transparent at the edges either. I don't know for sure, but it probably has something to do with the orientation of the optic axis of the material.

In my opinion it is b/c of the angle of the radius of the specifications of the plexiglass itself at that particular curvature of the bend, not to mention the rotary girders.
 
Two factors:
1) looking in on the end you are looking through more material. Since it isn't perfectly transparent, the more material you look through the more it blocks your vision.
2) The ends are quite rough - reflecting the light at all angles, so you cannot see through.

Get a cube with all smooth sides and you will see the same on all ends.
 
if you can get the edges perfectly smooth, on a good piece of glass, you can see to the other end, however the "edges" where the surfaces meet wont be. and usually, you wind up cutting your hands.
